Description: Sponsored by the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society, this  exhibit focuses on rare artifacts that tell the story of Winchester’s involvement with the John Brown raid. Free admission.

August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 2009 – “In the Footsteps of John Brown”

Description: Join a park ranger and discover that John Brown's Raid actually covered several miles, over 30 buildings and hundreds of people. Discover some of these places and people on this two hour, two mile walking tour of Harpers Ferry.

August 8-9, 2009 – Frederick Militia & Fire Company Days

Description: The city of Frederick will celebrate the militia support provided to Virginia in response to John Brown’s Raid. The support came from the militia companies that were part of the city’s fire companies. The event will include lectures, living history demonstrations, antique fire equipment and a downtown outdoor celebration along Carroll Creek.

Description: A TGIF program featuring Fred Morsell as Frederick Douglass on the Courthouse steps. Evening activities include a reception and a gospel concert followed by an encore performance by Fred Morsell.

August 22 , 2009 –Tour of the John Blessing House

Description: John Frederick Blessing was a local baker and confectioner who befriended John Brown during his imprisonment in Charles Town. Prior to his execution, Brown inscribed and presented his jailhouse Bible to Blessing. The Blessing house is now owned by the Jefferson County Black History Preservation Society. Currently the house is not open to the public on a regular basis. Join a guide for a special sesquicentennial tour of the John Blessing house.

August 23, 2009 – Lewis Washington Kidnapped by John Brown's Raiders at Beallair

Description: Join us at the Beallair manor house to discover how John Brown's Raiders kidnapped Lewis Washington, great grandnephew of our first president. Some of his slaves were also kidnapped and there are conflicting reports about whether the slaves joined the Raiders' efforts to start a rebellion. Docents will share these stories and more.

August 29 – September 26, 2009 – Wayside Theatre’s production of Robert E. Lee & John Brown, Lighting the Fuse

Description: A historical drama with music, this 2- act stage production focuses on John Brown and his infamous raid on Harpers Ferry, and Robert E. Lee, who was assigned to quash Brown’s attempted rebellion. Both men became and remain major symbols of this uniquely American conflict. Warner Crocker, Wayside Theatre’s Artistic Director, wrote the play first produced in 2004, and Steve Przybylski composed the music.
