Body |

Description: John
Brown’s Body, a two-act play adapted from the
epic poem by Stephen Vincent Benét, is coming
to Harpers Ferry and Shepherdstown, WV this Fall. The
play takes the audience back to the time of the American
Civil War and allows us to experience the lives of a
handful of remarkable people in that tragic period in
the history of the United States of America. Produced
by the Harpers Ferry Historic Town Foundation for the
Town of Harpers Ferry, the play is directed by Joe Yates
with a cast of local actors, musicians, and current and
former students from Shepherd University. Tickets
are $10 each and may be purchased at www.HistoricHarpersFerry.com.

7-8, 2009 - BROWN! John Brown’s 1859
Harpers Ferry Raid and the Ensuing Northern Virginia Panic |
Description: An
immersive field experience examining slavery in the region,
the nature of Harpers Ferry before the Raid, the nature
of John Brown’s
raiders, their experience at the Kennedy Farm and in the
raid itself, and the panic-stricken aftermath in Northern
Virginia during and after Brown’s trial. Participants
will spend time on a plantation, sit on the attic floor of
the Kennedy Farm, and actually march into Harpers Ferry from
Maryland by nightfall. Continental breakfast, supper,
bus, and all admissions included in $75.00 fee. Sponsored
by the Mosby Heritage Area Association.

13-15, 2009 – The Anvil, the Trial of John Brown by Julia
Davis |
Description: Sponsored
by the Old Court House Civil War Museum, this one-act
drama focuses on John Brown’s
trial. The play was performed in the newly renovated court
room of the Frederick County Court House in 2005, and
returns by popular demand in commemoration of the John
Brown Sesquicentennial.

28 , 2009 –Tour of the John Blessing House |

Description: John
Frederick Blessing was a local baker and confectioner who
befriended John Brown during his imprisonment in Charles
Town. Prior to his execution, Brown inscribed and presented
his jailhouse Bible to Blessing. The Blessing house is
now owned by the Jefferson County Black History Preservation
Society. Currently the house is not open to the public
on a regular basis. Join a guide for a special sesquicentennial
tour of the John Blessing house.
