John Brown's Body - Play Opens Sep. 24th
‘JOHN BROWN’S BODY’ COMMEMORATES 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF HARPERS FERRY RAID, USHERS IN CIVIL WAR SESQUICENTENNIAL
Harpers Ferry, WV — One hundred and fifty years after leading the ill-fated raid on the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry—which helped fan the flames that led to the Civil War--abolitionist John Brown is back in the limelight, this time on stage as one of the characters in the upcoming production of John Brown’s Body.
The two-act play, adapted from the epic poem by Stephen Vincent Benet, takes the audience back to the time of the Civil War and allows us to experience the lives of a handful of remarkable people who faced the challenge of a divided nation and had the courage to move forward.
From a slave ship captain to Abraham Lincoln; from a young Union soldier to Robert E. Lee; from a slave to John Brown, the play challenges audiences of today to continue their legacy and fulfill the promise of our nation.
Produced by the Harpers Ferry Historic Town Foundation with a cast of local actors, musicians, and current and former students from Shepherd University, John Brown’s Body performances will take place at the Camp Hill-Wesley United Methodist Church, 601 W. Washington Street in Harpers Ferry, WV on the following dates: Sept. 24, 25 and 26 at 8 p.m.; Oct. 1, 2 and 3 at 8 p.m.; Oct. 4 matinee at 3 p.m.; Oct. 15 and 17 at 8 p.m.; Oct. 18 matinee at 3 p.m.; and Oct. 29, 30 and 31 at 8 p.m.
November performances will take place at the St. Agnes Catholic Church, corner of Church and Washington Streets, Shepherdstown, WV on the following dates: Nov. 5, 6, and 7 at 8 p.m.; Nov. 12 and 13 at 8 p.m.; Nov. 15 matinee at 3 p.m.; Nov. 19 and 20 at 8 p.m.; Nov. 22 matinee at 3 p.m.
