Description: John
Brown’s
Body, a two-act play adapted from the epic poem by
Stephen Vincent Benét, is coming to Harpers Ferry
and Shepherdstown, WV this Fall. The play takes the
audience back to the time of the American Civil War and
allows us to experience the lives of a handful of remarkable
people in that tragic period in the history of the United
States of America. Produced by the Harpers Ferry
Historic Town Foundation for the Town of Harpers Ferry,
the play is directed by Joe Yates with a cast of local
actors, musicians, and current and former students from
Shepherd University. Tickets are $10 each and may
be purchased at www.HistoricHarpersFerry.com.

26, 2009 –Tour of the John Blessing House |

Description: John
Frederick Blessing was a local baker and confectioner who
befriended John Brown during his imprisonment in Charles
Town. Prior to his execution, Brown inscribed and presented
his jailhouse Bible to Blessing. The Blessing house is
now owned by the Jefferson County Black History Preservation
Society. Currently the house is not open to the public
on a regular basis. Join a guide for a special sesquicentennial
tour of the John Blessing house.

2009 – Lewis Washington Kidnapped by John Brown's
Raiders at Beallair
|
Description: Join
us at the Beallair manor house to discover how John Brown's
Raiders kidnapped Lewis Washington, great grandnephew of
our first president. Some of his slaves were also kidnapped
and there are conflicting reports about whether the slaves
joined the Raiders' efforts to start a rebellion. Docents
will share these stories and more.
